It is not only the school athletes of Sussex who have been achieving success at National level of late but at the other end of the age groups Sussex Masters have been flying the flag over the past couple of weekends.
At the BMAF indoor championships at Lee Valley Steyning walkers Ian Richards and Ron Penfold from Steyning continue to stamp their authority on the opposition.
Richards, now getting back to his true form following injury, won the M65 3000m event in 14:53.81s while moving on a decade Penfold took the M75 title in 9:13.27s.
Gavin Stephens (Worthing) worked hard in the M35 age group winning to 200m in 23.22s and took second place in the 400m in 50.96s
Newcomer to athletics David Spencer (Brighton & Hove) was also in winning form taking the M65 400m title in 64.92s.
In the Cross-country championships at the Wavertree course at Liverpool Worthing Striders’ Pauline Rich added another gold medal for Sussex winning the W70 championship in 35:12.
Caroline Wood (Arena 80) added a bronze medal in the W50 event clocking in 26:34 while although not getting amongst the medals this year Crawley’s Tony Lintern and Dave Beattie, who can both boast more than 50 years as Sussex Cross-country runners finished 11th and 15th respectively in the M65 race.
In the World Masters Indoor championships at Daegu Ciaran Harvey from Lewes just missed a medal in the M40 60 metres clocking 7.29s to take fourth place.
