Elise Lovell from Hastings headed up the Sussex athletes who made the journey to Sheffield for the National Indoor Combined Events championships at the weekend.

After a tense battle with Manchester’s Jessica Taylor-Jemmett in the senior women’s pentathlon three hundred points separated them after the five events with Lovell taking the silver medal with a total of 3778 points to the Manchester girl’s 4090 points.

Brighton & Hove’s Katie Garland had an equally excellent weekend scoring 3599 points to finish sixth for third place in the U23 group while club mate Becky Owen finished11th with 3387 just one place ahead of Longhill School teacher Leanne Buxton who was ten points adrift and the first veteran.

Crawley’s Beth Crocker filled 21st place with 2157 points.

In the Men’s heptathlon Charlie Roe from Chichester had an excellent result finishing sixth with a total of 5123 points.

Down south at Lee Valley there were a fistful of medals at the South of England U17/15 Indoor championships including two golds. A splendid 3.40m clearance by Crawley’s Natasha Purchas took the U17 pole vault while Alex Brothwell (Brighton Phoenix) took the U15 boys 1500m crown in 4:59.36s.

Jack Harris from Lewes cleared 3.90m to take the silver medal in the U17 pole vault and in the same age group Maia Hardman (Phoenix) ran a fine 800 metres in 2:14.53s for another silver medal.

There was a further silver medal for Worthing’s Kelsey Sutherland who not only leapt 4.84m in the U15 long jump but also added a bronze medal when clearing 1.50m in the high jump.

Pyers Lockwood (Eastbourne) snapped up another silver medal in the U15 300m in 39.11s with Brighton & Hove’s Arthur Haines clocking 44.35s for fifth place and Haines then took silver in the long jump with a fine jump of 5.23.

There were bronze medals for Louis Goffin (Brighton & Hove) who leapt 11.66m in the U17 triple jump, Crawley’s Will Snashall who cleared 2.90m in the U15 boy’s pole vault and in the U15 girls pole vault for Ivy Spencer (Lewes) who cleared 2.40m.
