Although there was ample league activity over the weekend results from these matches are slow coming through and we have to look a few thousand miles west for some cracking marks from California.
It was there that Rob Mullett from Lewes topped the athletic performances, as far as Sussex is concerned this weekend.
He became the first British runner to gain the Rio Standard when he clocked a personal best of 8:22.42s for the 3,000m steeplechase.
This removed a remarkable eight seconds off his previous best and lifts him to ninth place on the British All Time lists.
Also carving a chunk off his best time was another Rob, but this time Fitzgibbon (Brighton Phoenix).
He clocked 3:41.51s. for 1500m which removed two seconds from his previous best.
Lee Emanuel from Hastings was also in good form over 1500m, also in California, but again just missing the “Rio Standard” where he finished fourth in 3:36.20s and he tops the British Ranking for this season.
Making his season’s debut was Charlie Grice (Phoenix) over the shorter 800m distance in 1:46.95s which suggests that he is in pretty good form.
LOUGHBOROUGH.
There were a host of good Sussex performances at a windy Loughborough on Sunday including an impressive 400m hurdles victory in 50.48s by Seb Rodger from Eastbourne and this was on top of an imposing victory over the shorter 200m hurdles in 22.66s at Manchester the day before.
Rodger apart probably the most impressive run for Sussex at Loughborough was Brighton & Hove’s Cameron Fillery in the U20 110m hurdles. Although being squeezed into third place his time of 13.98s was the first time a Sussex U20 runner had ducked below 14 seconds for the distance and would have taken two tenths of a second off club mate Andy Todd’s 50 year old Sussex record were it not for a helpful wind.
There were four other third places for Sussex at this prestigious International meeting with Nicole Taylor from Crowborough clocking 10:37.79s for the 3000m hurdles, Kirsty Baptiste (Crawley) in the 200 metres, Finley Bigg (Phoenix) with 1:52.16s in the 800 metres and Brighton & Hove’s Gwilym Cooper battling with the wind to record 51.58s in the 400m hurdles.
In the “A” 800 metres Spencer Thomas (Phoenix) had a fine battle with Windsor’s Zac Curran before having to settle for second place in 1:48.99s.
Archie Davis (Phoenix) finished fourth in the 1500m in 3:45.87s while Katie Garland (Brighton & Hove) managed to chalk up a legal PB of 14.63s in the 100m hurdles which lifts her to eighth on the Sussex All Time list.
Enjoying himself in Spain Ian Richards from Steyning continues to collect Masters Title and he added another couple of crowns to his collected.
In the European Non Stadium championships won the M65 10km road walking title in 54:41s and the 30km crown in 3:01:55s.
