More Under 15 Records – Euro U23 Champs

The Sussex Under 15 athletes are determined to rewrite the Sussex U15 League records this season and the had another bite last Wednesday.

In June six tumbled in both the East and West match and at Wednesday’s East Division match at Lewes another three fell by the wayside.

In almost perfect conditions newly crowned English Schools Junior javelin champion Lizzie Korczak broke the League record again having broken it in June and then lost it a couple of days later to Horsham’s Peanut Meekings.

Although the atmosphere at Lewes was a little different to the Schools meeting at Birmingham Korczak was still up for some fine throwing and she ended up setting a new League record of 37.38m.

The West Division match will not be held until this coming Friday when Meekings can have another tilt at the record.

Probably the classiest event of the evening was girls 800 metres where both the County, Rose Chaplin (Eastbourne) and Sussex Schools, Tatam Walker (Brighton & Hove) champions clashed.

It was however Lewes’s Chloe Kornevall, who has been racing over 200 and 300 metres mainly this season, strode out powerfully from the start and caused a major upset.

Kornevall led from the start and had her nose in front at the bell and continued to forcd the pace around the final lap to hold on to win the race. In a close finish, Kornevall clocked 2:21.3s to break Chaplin’s three week old record with Chaplin in second place in 2:22.4s and Walker third in 2:23.2s.

The third record came towards the end of the meeting when Lois Dooley (Brighton & Hove), who had also been in action at Birmingham at the weekend, only had club mate Rebecca Losh for opposition set off on her own and had a remarkable run to clock 4:47.8s to remove nearly three seconds from Almi Nerurkar’s (Phoenix) three year old mark.

In the team event Brighton & Hove were comfortable winners with 206 points to Lewes who scored 164 points, Eastbourne who totalled 127 and Brighton Phoenix with 40 points.

Robbie makes final:

Racing in the European U23 championships at Bdygoszcz  in Poland Brighton Phoenix’s Robbie Fitzgibbon had a great run in the heat of the 1,500m to finish fourth in 3:43.47s to qualify for the final.

In a slowly run final however he was squeezed into eighth place in 3:50.07s.
