There were more medals, including another gold, for the Sussex Schools team at the English Schools Championships at Manchester on Saturday, when the Intermediate (U17) took the stage in sunny and dry conditions.
As anticipated the gold came in the pole vault when Priory’s Gemma Tutton not only took the title but her winning height of 3.95m was also a championship best performance and results in a place in the Home Schools international meeting which this year it is hoped will be held in September instead of the usual weekend following the championships.
Gemma has already topped the four-metre mark twice this season.

Joining her is the international team will be Rachael Wall (Brighton Girls School) who took the silver medal in the javelin throw with a fine effort of 41.22m. Ironically, Jemima Caldwell from Crawley who goes to school in Surrey won the title. Jemima had won the Sussex County U17 title the previous weekend.

It was a battle for the medals by Davison Schools Hope Yelling and Amber Purcell but this time Amber had the edge and took the bronze medal in the triple jump with 11.27m to Hope 10.97m in fifth place.
Just missing the medals and taking the award for determination in the high jump was Will Sutton (Oriel). Going for a personal best of 1.94m, he crashed into the uprights, hitting his head and being carted away for tests. Luckily, he was allowed back, the bar was still at the same height, and he soared over to take fourth place.
There were a couple of sixth places with Yasmin Kashen (Tanbridge House) running a personal best and breaking the 10-minute barrier clocking 9:59.6s for th3 3.000m and Isaac Lancaster (Sackville) clearing 3.60m in the high jump.
As on the first day, some results are not to hand and we will come back to missing events when a full, accurate list, is available.
