More fine efforts at Manchester

28 June, 2021 By Reg Hook

There were two more fifth places for Sussex athletes on the final day of the British Championships and Olympic Trials at Manchester on Sunday.

The high winds and poor conditions for late June saw both athletes and limited spectators well strapped up.

The two fifth places were taken by the younger athletes on show, who had both won national age-group titles at the England u20/23 Championships at Bedford the previous weekend.

In the opening event of the day, 20-year-old Worthing hammer thrower, Ben Hawkes, was close to his best with a mighty throw of 67.55m, a strong performance in a group of older throwers.

Brighton & Hove’s Liz Korczak, who is only 18, had a troubled time in the difficult conditions in the javelin throw and  had only three legal throws. Indeed most of the experienced throwers had only four legal throws, but a good first round meant that Liz was fourth for most of the competition. Her best of 47.86m, was excellent in the conditions.

There were also two sixth places for Sussex with Beth Kidger (Brighton Phoenix) clocking 15:54.90s, little more than one second below her best; which was a fine effort in the windy conditions and Crawley pole vaulter George Turner cleared 5.00m, no mean feat, in the wind, for his sixth place.

Clubmate Kimbely Baptiste ran well in her heat of the 200m but finished fourth amidst tough competition and with a 24.09s clocking did not qualify for the final.
