There were mixed fortunes for the three individual Sussex School athletes who travelled to Boston for the finals of the English Schools Combined events championships.
Despite having a slightly lower key season that last year the ever reliable Matt Smith (BHASVIC), in his final year at these championships had a good result in the Senior (U19) decathlon by placing tenth with 5470 points.
He did manage to include one Pb in his ten events with a run of 18.07s in the 110m hurdles.
His other efforts in rather windy conditions were 12.07s for the 100m, 6.14m long jump, 10.98m shot putt, 1.80m high jump, 55.98s 400m, 35.98m discus, 3.30m pole vault, 43.71m javelin throw and 5:01.57s for the 1500m.
Just two girls made the trip to the final this year and April Hanslow (Crawley) placed 19th in the Senior Heptathlon with 2966 points. Hanslow clocked 20.91s for the 100m hurdles, high jumped 1.35m, put the shot a Pb of 6.65m, clocked 28.24s for the 200m, long jumped 4.18, threw the javelin 20.69m and clocked 2:29.59s for the 800 metres.
Injury to Brighton Colleges Ruby Jerges in the junior (U15) Pentathlon meant she did not complete the competition. Jerges clocked a nifty11.00s in the 75m hurdles, putt the shot 6.63m and high jumped 1.44m but she was unable to start the long which was rather shame as she is a talented all-rounder and the long jump is probably her best event.
