Sussex athletes scooped up a handful of medals at the South of England Young Athletes championships at Ashford at the weekend in an event that underlined the suitability of holding Young Athletes championships during the school holidays. Several leading Sussex athletes missed the championships and that certainly applied to the other South of England Counties.

Continuing her fine pole vault form Natalie Purchas (Crawley) soared to a fine 3.50m in the U17 Vault and she was well supported by Crawley club mates in the U15 age group where Joe Smith knotched up another impressive run to win the 1500m in 4:9.12s, eight second clear of his nearest rival and Katie Bristow did not break a season’s habit of finishing ahead of her rivals clocking 11.40s in the U15 75m hurdles.

Maia Hardman (Brighton Phoenix) won the U15 800m in 2:07.52s and fellow Phoenix athlete Renee Bassin won the U13 girls long jump Open event with 4.34m.

In the U17 age group Millie Miles (Lewes) took the silver behind Purchas in the pole vault clearing 3.30m. and Crawley athletes Lillie Franks cleared 1.65m in the High jump, Vicki Pellett threw the hammer 50.23m and George Crocker clocked 1:59.43s in the 800m for silver.

Harry Rienecker-Found (Brighton & Hove) collected silver in the U15 high jump clearing 1.75m and Sam Ellesley (Worthing) won his silver in the U15 Hammer with 45.99m while elder brother Ben won a bronze medal in in the U17 triple jump leaping 11.62m and Mayo Daramola (Eastbourne) clocked 37.89s for a bronze medal in the U15 300m.
