Sussex athletes scooped a handful of medals in the Southern Counties Track championships at the Crystal Palace over the weekend including three gold medals and a Sussex record in the U20 events.
The record came in the javelin throw where Lewes’s Scot Staples, the talented County champion pulled out a brilliant effort of 59.68m which added just ten centimetres to Worthing’s Simon Kearney’s fifteen year old County record.
The other two titles went to U17 athletes who were competing up an age group.
Amber Anning (Brighton & Hove) seeking another Commonwealth Games Youth standard dominated the 400m race finishing seven metres clear of her nearest rival in 55.05s, well inside the standard and in conditions that were much windier that the athletes had to suffer at the Sussex Schools championships at Crawley.
The third title came from Crawley Pole vaulter Natasha Purchas, who won the Sussex Schools title on Saturday, notched up a clear victory when clearing 3.60m in the difficult conditions.
Finley Bigg (Brighton Phoenix) had an impressive 400 metres to take the silver medal after a close battle in 49.14s while there were U20 silver medals in the discus throw where Emily Robinson (Brighton & Hove) threw 35.81m and the high jump where Lillie Franks (Crawley) cleared 1.70m.
Harry Baker (Horsham) and Jack Leitch (Worthing) both picked up bronze medals with Baker clearing a pb of 1.98m in the high jump and Leitch clocking 15:44.95s in the 5000 metres event.
In the senior events there were a silver and bronze medals with Brighton & Hove’s Ian Crowe-Wright having to settle for silver after a close, tactical battle with Sean Molloy from Tonbridge in 1:54.64s while George Turner’s big sister Holly running faster than ever outdoor to finish third in 55.19m.
