Sussex youngsters scooped up a plethora of medals at the South of England U15 and U17 championships at Lee Valley over the weekend, with some twenty youngsters on the podium and four of them achieving gold.
Conditions were fairly mild for Saturday’s events but Sunday produced a strong head wind for most of the track races.
Crawley hurdlers Ben Okeiyi Vicencio and Katie Bristowe both won titles, with Vicencio clocking 57.71s, with Eastbourne’s Pyers Lockwood taking the bronze medal in 58.16s in the 400m hurdles, while Bristow clocked 11.73s for victory in the 80m hurdles with club mate Abi Packham taking the silver medal in 11.80s.
Lewes pole vaulters Emily Oakenden and Amelia Hatchard both won medals in the U15 pole vault with Oakenden taking gold by clearing 3.00m and Hatchard clearing 2.70m to take the bronze medal while in the U15 high jump Isabelle Humphreys (Crawley) cleared 1.63m for her gold medal.
There were U17 silver medals for Moyo Sargent (Eastbourne) in the 400m in 49.34s, Chloe Kornevall (Lewes) in the women’s 400m in 59.30s, Kelsey Sutherland (Worthing) triple jump with 10.91m and U15s Seb Wallace (Horsham) in the 80m hurdles in 11.50s and he also gained a bronze medal in the long jump with a windy 6.15m, Chardonnay Bowles (Worthing) in the javelin throw with 36.52m and Horsham’s Surrey athlete Dan Dearden took silver in the pole vault on count back with 3.40m with Ori Bartle clearing the same height for the bronze medal.
In the U13 age group Emma Kimber (Crawley) was second in the shot putt with 8.66m.
The other bronze medallists were Adam Lindo (Crawley) with a windy 6.55m in the U17 long jump with club mate Millie Noyce putting the shot 13.11m and Leo Walker (Horsham) throwing the discus 41.10m while the U15 medallists were Ruby Anning (Brighton & Hove) in the 200m in 26.29s and Daniel Tewogbade (Crawley) in the high jump with 1.75m.
