Mansfield fourth at Sheffield

12 February, 2017 By Sussex AA

Sophie Mansfield from Brighton Phoenix had one of the best runs of her career so far when she finished fourth in the 800 metres final on day one of the British Indoor Championships and European Games trials at Sheffield.

Although not able to challenge the medallists Mansfield turned in a nippy 2:08.46s for her fourth placing.

Club mate Spencer Thomas won a well judge 800 metres heat in 1:58.68s to reach the final while Robbie Fitzgibbon (Phoenix) eased through his heat of the 1500 metres to make today’s final when placing fourth in 3:49.40s. In the same race Brighton & Hove’s Ian Crowe-Wright finished ninth in 3:53.10s which was faster than the winner of the first heat but did not see him through to the final.

There were several other good efforts in various heats with Holly Turner (Crawley) clocking 55.52s in the 400 metres, Cameron Fillery (Brighton & Hove) clocking 8.28s for fourth place in the 60m hurdles while fellow Brighton & Hove runner Matt Hewitt clocked 8.43s for eighth place in his heat.

Finley Bigg (Phoenix) placed fifth in his 800m heat in 1:54.48s and County long jump record holder Tom French (Blackheath & Bromley) leapt 7.00m in the long jump but this did not get him into the final rounds.
