Long journeys for Crawley athletes in British Leagues

5 August, 2019 By Kate Matthews

With the summer holiday season in full swing, both the Crawley men’s and women’s teams were well below strength in their final National League matches over the weekend.

The Men, in Division 2 of the BAL travelled to Glasgow and the Women in Division 1 of the UKWL to Wigan.

Both teams’ status was assured before the day with the men retaining their position in the second division for another season by placing fourth in the  League. The women, after several seasons in division one finished bottom of the League and will drop to division two next season.

The women produced five winners at Wigan with Kimbeley Baptiste, who is currently based in Doha, winning the 100m in 11.92s and Holly Turner winning the “B” event in 12.41s. Turner went on to win the 400m in 55.13s. The results of the 200m races have not been published.

Luton athlete Shanara Hibbert won the triple jump with a useful 12.69m and team manager, Jo Rowland, who had missed the previous match, won the shot put with 12.90m and finished third in the javelin event with 39.97m

At Glasgow with the men, the Crawley athletes dominated the javelin throw with Marcin Balun and Scott Staples both throwing in excess of 65m, Balun taking the “A” throw with 66.68m and Staples the “B” throw with 65.25m.

There were several impressive second places with Australian Sam Shore clocking 55.5s in the 400m hurdles, Matt Overall clocking 48.41s in the 400m flat, Joe Massimo recording 21.90s in the 200m, George Turner soaring over 5.00m in the pole vault and Matt Lasis throwing the hammer 50.82m.
