Junior International Matches – SAL – Preview

Rob Mullett (Lewes) will be the only Sussex athlete in action at the World Championships in London next month as he has deservedly been selected to race in the 3,000m steeplechase.

Broadbridge Heath resident Jade Lally, who is a Surrey athlete, is also included in the Great Britain Squad in the discus event.

Orla Brothers (Crawley) who won the 400m hurdles at the Schools championships last weekend has been added to Cameron Fillery (Brighton & Hove) and Toby Harries (Brighton Phoenix) for the British team for the European Under 20 championships at Groeseto in Italy which start next week while Archie Davis (Phoenix) has also been added to the Junior team in the 1500m..

In the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas, which start on Tuesday, Amber Anning (Brighton & Hove) who was originally selected for the 200m has been switched to her number one event, the 400 metres.

Already in situ in Bdygoszcz, Poland, Robbie Fitzgibbon (Brighton Phoenix) will be racing over 1500m in the European U23 Championships this weekend.

Southern Athletics League:

Last weekend’s fourth round matches saw mixed fortunes for Sussex teams with Lewes the only winning club and they triumph at their rearranged their home match, it was held on Sunday  instead of Saturday, scoring 220 points to second placed Sutton’s 132 points in Div 3 SE.

In Division one, at home, Crawley were squeezed into third place while Eastbourne in Div 2E  at Stevenage placed second and Brighton & Hove finished in fourth place in Div 2W at Aldershot.

The rest of the Sussex teams are in various third Division matches with Chichester in fourth place in D 3W at Swindon and Worthing in another D 3W match placing third at Salisbury.

Sussex clubs were involved in four Div 3 SE matches with Horsham Blue Star second at Home and in a second match at Broadbridge Heath East Grinstead were also second and there was yet another second place for Hastings at Twickenham.

 This weekend’s League events:

Both Crawley in Division 3 and Brighton & Hove in Division 4 will be competing in the British Athletics League at Bedford on Saturday.

As an experiment all British League matches are being held at Bedford on Saturday.

The Crawley Women’s team, who are heading for promotion back to Division one of the UKWAL will complete their League season on Sunday at Leigh.

There is another round of the YDL Lower age group matches at various venues across the South Counties on Saturday.
