Janis Long

7 July, 2026 By Kate Matthews

It is with great sadness that Sussex announces the passing of Janis Long, on Sunday, 5 July 2026.

Janis was one of the most significant figures in the history of Eastbourne Rovers Athletic Club and one of Sussex athletics' longest-serving and most respected volunteers. For over seven decades she devoted her life to our club and to the sport she loved, leaving a legacy that few can equal.

Born in Eastbourne on 15 June 1935, Janis first represented Eastbourne Rovers as a talented young athlete. A gifted all-rounder, she competed with distinction in the high jump, hurdles, long jump, shot put and pentathlon during one of the strongest eras of women's athletics in Sussex. She amassed nearly forty Sussex Championship medals despite losing significant periods of her athletic career through anaemia, a serious road accident and later an Achilles injury.

Among her many achievements were Sussex titles in the 440 yards, 80 metres hurdles and Pentathlon, together with a Sussex long jump record. Nationally, she was a pioneer of the women's pentathlon, finishing third in the W.A.A.A. National Championships in 1955 after earlier fifth and sixth-place finishes while still a teenager. She represented Sussex on numerous occasions and was recognised as one of the county's outstanding all-round athletes of her generation.

Her contribution to Eastbourne Rovers, however, extended far beyond competition.

In recognition of her dedication to the club as both an athlete and team member, Janis became a Life Member of Eastbourne Rovers in 1962. Three years later, while still competing and working full-time, she accepted the role of Club Secretary. She would serve in that position for more than twenty-five years, as well as spending five years as Club Treasurer, following in the footsteps of her father Doug, who had also served the club following its re-formation.

Janis possessed an exceptional talent for organisation, administration and record keeping. She became the custodian of the club's history, ensuring that achievements were recorded, competitions were organised and athletes were supported. Her meticulous attention to detail, reliability and commitment became hallmarks of everything she did.

For decades she organised Eastbourne Rovers' home meetings, initially alongside her duties as Secretary and then once again from 2010 until finally handing over the role in 2019. Generations of athletes, officials and volunteers benefited from her dedication, often without ever realising the enormous amount of work she undertook behind the scenes.

Her tireless service led to her election as President of Eastbourne Rovers Athletic Club, an honour bestowed in recognition of her outstanding contribution and lifelong passion for the club and for athletics. She remained a constant source of support, encouragement and wisdom, always taking great pride in seeing athletes of all ages develop and succeed.

Beyond Eastbourne Rovers, Janis was also a stalwart of Sussex athletics. As Reg Hook wrote when recognising her remarkable career in 2020, there were few, if any, people in Sussex athletics who could match the length and breadth of her involvement in the sport.

Our thoughts and condolences go to Janis' family, friends and all at Eastbourne Rovers.
