James Turner heads Sussex in London

25 April, 2015 By Sussex AA

James Turner from Lewes headed the Sussex runners in the London Marathon on Sunday.

By and large it was not a vintage year for Sussex as far as high placings go but there were probably more Sussex runners inside 2 hours 40 minutes.

Turner, who is currently at Ambleside, is coached by Allison Benton and trains with her group when he is at home in Sussex. He will compete for Brighton & Hove when he returns from university this summer.

On Sunday he chopped some twelve minutes off his previous best time to finish 80th in 2:32:13 the fastest time by a Sussex runner so far this year.

James Mountford (Hastings) removed six seconds from his previous best clocking 2:35:02 in 133rd place while Neil Smith (Crawley) placed 171st in 2:36:10 and also finished 20th in the M40 age group.

Simon Gill from Bognor placed 179th in 2:36:29, in 102nd place came Karl Spelhurst (Midhurst) in 2:36:48 and James Westlake (Crawley) clocked 2:37:57 in 233rd place.

Dan Anderson (Hastings) was a little below his best clocking 2:38:53 in 257 place Lewis Sida (Lewes) placed 284 in 2:39:42, which also placed him 18th in the O45 age group and Steve Wrapson (Horsham) completed the Sussex runners in the Top 500 finished 495th in 2:44:59.

Having ploughed cross-eyed through the top 500 places, I hope I have found them all.

There were just two Sussex women who achieved that but no one cracked the three hour barrier. Anna Tolmchova from Crowborough placed 261st in 3:12:12 and Tara Shanahan (Arena 80) 417th in 3:18:44.
