Both the Crawley and Brighton & Hove teams are holding their own in the current British League battles following Saturday’s matches at Yate and Stretford.
In a nail-bitingly close Division two match at Yate where just 25 points covered the first six teams the Crawley squad finished fifth with 280 points just eighteen points behind the winning Newquay and Par team’s 298 points. Kent A.C scored 295, Bournemouth 290, Kingston & Poly 288 with Crawley scoring 280 and Herne Hill 273.
Currently Crawley is placed sixth in the League but comfortably three points clear of the relegation zone.
Richard Reeks, the Surrey all-rounder who popped up in many events and relay during the afternoon was the only “A string winner taking the 110m hurdles in 15.38s.
The 4 x 400m relay team of Matt Overall, Rhys Turner, Woody Cox and Sean Shore won a tight battle to win while the Crawley sprint relay team were edged into second place.
Leigh Walker took second place in the “A” pole vault with 4.20m, the same height as that cleared by George Turner who won the “B” vault while Jason Hussain made a welcome step back to fitness following injury and won the “B” 200 metres in 21.77s after U20 athlete Rhys Turner had finished third in the “A” race in 21.55s.
Brighton & Hove had to take the long journey to Stretford for their Division four match and had to settled for fourth team spot to match their placing in the opening round last month.
Again “A” winners were hard to find but Howard Bristow and Kevin Moore repeated their Sussex 5,000m Championship battle from last month with a similar result with Bristow winning the “A” race in 14:38.19s and Moore the “B” race in 14:59.89s.
Although not scoring particularly well in the flat sprint races the Brighton & Hove team of Toby Hawkins, Pa-Abou Nijie, Joe Morris and Chris Hewitt won the sprint relay in 44.40s.
Harry Baker cleared 1.88m for second place in the “A” high jump with Harry Reinecker-Found winning the “B” jump with 1.78m while the long jump saw a double second placing with Matt Smith leaping 6.25m and Rafe Brooks 5.95m. Smith was also to finish second in the pole vault with 3.03 and then finished his afternoon by winning the “B” javelin throw with 41.75m after Joe Morris, who had appeared in several events during the afternoon had thrown 41.79m for fifth place in the “A” competition.
