It’s gone!
Roy Cruttenden’s Sussex senior men’s long jump record of 7.59m, set way back in 1956, reached its Diamond Jubilee but after sixty years it has been broken.
Brighton athlete Tom French, now competing for Blackheath in Division one of the British Athletics League, has on Saturday, added just one centimetre to the record.
Jumping into a slight head wind at Watford French, who has been creeping closer to his target over the last few years, leapt 7.60m to remove what must not only be the longest standing Sussex record but probably one of the longest County records in the country.
Unfortunately French’s effort will not be able to be celebrated at next weekend County championships as French has not entered to defend his title.
The oldest Sussex record is now the fifty two year old shot putt mark of, another Brighton athlete, Suzanne Allday who recorded 15.16m in 1964.
