Sussex athletes did well racing on the Continent at the weekend with Elise Lovell and Sophie Mansfield setting Indoor personal best performances.
Lovell from Hastings was in action for Great Britain in an International Combined Events match Prague and she strung together a fine series of performance to place 11th in the Pentathlon with a total of 3892 points some two hundred points more than her previous best effort.
There were three Sussex athletes in action in Vienna with Seb Rodger from Eastbourne, the British 400 metres hurdles champion, having a cracking run on the flat to take second place behind Turkey’s Allinitas Batuham in 46.98s to the winner’s 46.65s.
Also in Vienna Brighton Phoenix’s Spencer Thomas and Sophie Mansfield were in action over 800 metres. Thomas placed third in his race in 1:49.33s while Mansfield recorded an indoor and outdoor personal best of 2:09.00s for fifth place.
At Bratislava Brighton & Hove’s Ian Crowe-Wright, making his England debut, finished third in the 1,500m in 3:52.90s while Finley Bigg (Phoenix) placed fourth in the 800 metres in 1:56.29s.
LONDON GAMES
Several Sussex athletes turned in winning performances at the London Indoor Games at Lea Valley over the past couple of weekends.
Pyers Lockwood from Eastbourne ducked inside 40 seconds to win the U15 boys 300 metres in 39.4s while in the U17 girls 300m Louisa Saunders (Brighton Phoenix) notched up a victory in 41.45s.
In the U17 pole vault Jack Harris (Lewes) soared over 4.05m for his victory, Crawley’s Millie Noyce putt a fine 11.37m to win the U15 shot putt and Emily Ghose from Crowborough, but competing for Tonbridge, won the U20 3km walk in 15:44.81s.
Eastbourne’s Daniel James-Thomas took second place in the U20 shot putt with 12.54m while Horsham’s Ruby Jerges, in her first year in the U15 age group leapt 5.07m for third place in the long jump.
