There were good performances by the three Sussex athletes who were selected to compete for the England under 18 team in their annual Youth Nations Cup match in Dublin.
It was mixed fortunes in the opening track event, the 400m hurdles, when English Schools U17 champion Pyers Lockwood, after making a fast start and looking well placed, crashed the ninth barrier and was brought down. Although he got back to his feet and finished he was a long way adrift in fourth place.
However U19 English School bronze medallist, Ben Okeiyi, had a brilliant race and took a fine second place in a Pb of 54.72s.
There was also a fine second place for Moyo Sargent in the 400m flat event in 48.97s.
Pyers, suitably strapped up, and Moyo gave the England team a great start in the 4 x 400 relay but they were unable to carry the lead through to the finish and there was another second place behind the hosts. Ben ran in the England “B” team who finished third.
