On Friday evening Worthing thrower Ben Hawkes will be at the Grand Hotel in Brighton as one of the finalists in the Sussex Sports Awards ‘Young Sports Personality’ of the Year category.  Hawkes had a fantastic season in which he broke county Under 17 records in the Hammer, Discus and Shot. In his speciality – the Hammer – he won the English Schools, the Schools International and Schools Games and ended the year unbeaten as UK number one.

Meanwhile on Saturday, a previous winner of the YSP, Brighton & Hove’s Amber Anning, will be in Coventry to receive the British Athletics Supporters Club ‘Young Female Athlete of the Year Award’ for her 2017 season. Representing England Amber won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas over 400m. Her time of 53.68s was a Sussex Senior Women’s record and was the fastest time run by a British 16-year-old girl for 33 years. She followed this up with a silver relay medal and ended the season with a national title over 200m and the world lead (U18) time of 37.79s over 300m when she smashed the School Games Championship Best.

Anning ended 2017 topping the UK U17 rankings over 200m, 300m and 400m and ranked second over 100m. Her time of 11.79s in her one race of the season equalled the Sussex U17 record held by Carley Wenham.
