Toby Harries (Brighton Phoenix) is the sole Sussex athlete with the United Kingdom team at the World Championships at Doha which start today.
Following his fine fifth place in the 400 metres final at the recent National Championships Harries, who clocked a Pb of 46.36s in the heats, has been included in the 4 x 400m relay squad and will, hopefully, be called upon for the heats which are later in the week.
Harries 46.36s clocking is the second fastest time by a Sussex athlete behind Sean Baldock’s (Hastings) 45.20s which was clocked in 2000 the year that he ran in the heats in Sydney while in 2004 at Athens he ran in the final where the UK team placed fifth.
Cross Country Relays
The main centre of interest this weekend will be the Goodwood Cross Country Relays on Saturday.
The event incorporates the Sussex Championships and entries are good with 160 teams entered in the four races as athletes are eager to start their cross-country season. The recent rains are likely to make the course more like a cross-country race than is usual for this event.
The event is held on the Downs opposite the Grandstand with the U13 Boys and Girls race starting the afternoon’s racing at 12.00 with the Senior and Masters completing the racing at 2.30.
