Grice Bumped out of Qualification

17 August, 2016 By Sussex AA

A very slow race spelt danger and disappointment for Charlie Grice (Brighton Phoenix) in his heat of the 1500 metres in Rio on Tuesday.

A pedestrian pace meant that all the runners were bunched  as they rounded the final bend but although Grice had got himself in a good position as they sprinted to the finish he was overwhelmed and buffeted by other runners.

He was strongly fancied to qualify for the second round and it was hoped that he would reach the final but in the buffeting he lost his pace and slipped out of contention.

After just missing qualification for the next round of the 400 metres hurdles on Monday Seb Rodger from Eastbourne was then promoted when two qualifiers were disqualified only for his hopes to be dashed when they were both re-admitted.

In the Discus throw Jade Lally from Horsham was eliminated after throwing some ten metres below her best and placing 15th in her group with 54.06m.

Although the four athletes, including Rob Mullett (Lewes) in the steeplechase, did not produce their best performances in Rio we have to remember that they were all first timers and each had done remarkably well this season to even make the team.

The experience will be good for next year’s World Championships in London and maybe Japan in four year.
