August has been a pretty good month for many Sussex athletes. Despite the rather late start to any competition a few Sussex records have been broken.
In the 3000m at Bromley there were fine runs from Crowborough’s Nicole Taylor and Brighton Phoenix’s Almi Nerurkar who both notched up personal bests with
Almi also breaking the U20 record. Nicole clocked 9:12.2s in the senior age group while Almi, who is primarily a triathlete, ran 9:21.3s, chopping a couple of seconds from club mate Bridget Smyth’s 9:23.0s way back in 1984. This effort lifts her to tenth place on the Sussex All-time list.
The second record also came in the U20 women’s age group where Lizzie Korczak (Brighton & Hove) beat her previous best five marks during the competition with a magnificent throw of 48.51m. This removed club mate Sam Redd’s record of 47.66m which had bee
n set in in 2002, before Lizzie was born and takes her into second place on the Sussex All-time list.
At Worthing Crawley’s Mame Diarra Sow, another U20, leapt 12.54 in the triple jump which is better than the the Sussex record.
Cameron Fillery from Saltdean clocked 13.55s in Poland, Brighton Phoenix’s Charlie Da’Vall Grice made a steady start to this later season in the Diamond League 1,500m in Monaco, with 3:34.6s and Crawley’s Beth Crocker set a personal best with a leap of 1.73m in the high jump at Warsaw.
Another triple jumper in good form was U17 Hope Yelling from Worthing who leapt 11.39 at Lee Valley at the beginning of the month, while Livvy Connor from Lewes had a windy leap of 5.90m in the long jump at Chelmsford at the weekend and backed this up with a legal 5.59m.
There were several other good performances for Sussex at Chelmsford particularly in the sprints with Eastbourne’s Bailey Wright clocking a windy 10.54s in the 100m and also posted a legal 10.65s and Crawley’s Alessio Anah in the 100m clocked a pb of 11.00s in the U17 age group and in the U15s Vittorio Anah also clocked a pb of 11.66s. and a windy 11.43s.
In the 800m there were personal best for Brighton Phoenix athletes George Mills and Archie Davis with George clocking 1:47.1s at Stretford and Archie 1:48.5s at Worthing.
Both these two will be in action this weekend at the National Championships at Manchester along with several other top senior athletes and Under 20 athletes Almi Nerurkar and Lizzie Korczak.
