There were a clutch of medals for Sussex athletes on finals day of the BUCS Indoor championships at Sheffield on Sunday with Elise Lovell striking gold.
Competing in the long jump Lovell from Hastings, along with Anna Short from Lancing both Sussex jumpers had excellent completions. Competing for Brighton University Lovell saved her best jumping to the final having qualified for the final in third place with 5.78m. Come the final Lovell improved to an excellent 5.88m to finished 7cm clear of Loughborough’s Mary Elock.
Competing for Leeds Short produced a personal best leap of 5.76m the same distance as Lucy Turner from Wigan but unfortunately Short lost the bronze medal on countback and had to be satisfied with a never the less excellent fourth place.
There was a silver medal for Brighton University’s Joseph Watson who heaved 16.47m while Crawley’s Sam Heawood, competing for Brunel took the bronze medal with 16.23m while Crawley/Brighton club mate Holly Turner scooped up another bronze in the 400 metres.
Having won her semi-final in 55.84s she then clocked her fastest ever 400m time indoors or out of 54.91s to take the bronze medal.
A third bronze medal for Sussex came in the 1,500m where a brilliant run from Brighton & Hove/Birmingham’s Ian Crowe-Wright saw him finish a close third in 3:49.94s.
There were some near misses as well for Sussex athletes as Brighton & Hove/Swansea’s Beth Close roared to her fastest ever 200m in 24.76s to win her heat but was squeezed out of the medals in the final clocking 24.91s for fourth place.
In a tight battle for Sussex honours in the pole vault Jade Brewster (Horsham/Southampton) and Livvy Connor (Lewes/Birmingham) both soared over 3.70m but Brewster took fourth place on countback and Connor had to settle for fifth place while Chloe Billingham (Horsham/Cambridge) cleared 3.40m for and excellent eighth place.
