In her first season as an under-17 athlete, after two years living in Spain, Lewes’s Gemma Tutton won her first national indoor pole vault title on home turf.
Competing at the age group championships in Sheffield, Tutton who is the UK under-13 and under 15 record holder, vaulted 3.70m for victory. Her clubmate - last year's U15 indoor and English Schools' champion - Emilie Oakden - claimed the bronze medal with a height of 3.35m. Just behind Emilie, in a three way tie for fourth place, was yet another Lewes athlete – last year's outdoor U15 bronze medallist - Amelia Hatchard - with a 3.20m marker.
The silver medallist in the U15 girls pole vault competition was – you guessed it – also a Lewes athlete. Hannah Russell more than rose to the occasion, with a 19-centimetre personal best clearance of 3.20m.
The ever consistent Cleo Tomlinson (HBS), set two personal bests in the Long Jump, starting with 5.80m, which she increased by one centimetre to claim silver and also exceed the outdoor Sussex U17 women’s record. Her clubmate Dan Dearden was fourth in the U17 men’s Pole Vault, as was Lewes's Jack Harris in the U20 men’s event. Jack vaulted 4.40m - the same as the bronze medallist - but lost a podium spot on countback.
Crawley’s Alessio Anah was sixth in the U17 men’s 60m Hurdles final in 8.38s after setting an 8.19 PB in the semi-final. Morgan Hayward also of Crawley made the cut in the U20 men’s Triple Jump, where he finished sixth with a leap of 13.52m.
Unfortunately Eastbourne's Moyo Sargent, a medal contender, pulled up in his U20 men's 400m semi-final with an apparent hamstring injury.
