The Sussex Under 17 team did well to finished fourth of eight competing Counties in the South East Inter-county match at Normans Park, Bromley on Sunday.
The larger surrounding neighbours Kent, Surrey and Hampshire underlined their strength scoring 707.5, 667.5 and 631.5 points respectively to the 592 amassed by Sussex who got the better of a close battle for fourth place with Hertfordshire who finished on 578.5 points but were well pleased finishing ahead of the Middlesex and Essex teams.
There were few Sussex “A” winners but the strength of pole vaulting in the County was underlined by their complete domination of the events by Sussex vaulters.
With strong pockets of pole vault coaching through Rick Pilling at Lewes and Mick Cole at Horsham Sussex are certainly getting a reputation for excellence in this event and at Bromley Sussex athletes won “A” and “B” events for both the Men’s and Women’s events.
Jack Harris and Bill Saunders both cleared 4.00m and the decision on who won “A” was decided on count back while in the women’s event Mimi Miles soared over a PB of 3.40m to win the “A” vault while Natasha Puchas cleared 3.30m to take the “B” event.
Ben Hawkes set a new PB when winning the hammer throw with 61.62m while Marcus Jones finished second in the “B” event with 46.67m while in the women’s hammer Vicki Pellett reached 49.51m for second place in the “A” event and Larissa Carter won the “B” event with a PB of 48.49m.
After missing the English Schools through injury Tom Eames did exceptionally well to bounce back to form chopping a couple of seconds off his PB when taking second place in 4:05.72s while the 800m also saw rich pickings for the Sussex men with Joe Body taking second place in the “A” race in 2:0016s but George Crocker smashed his PB with 1:58.18s to win the “B” race and an impressive "B" victory in the 100 metres for Bailey Wright in 11.37s..
