Fourth place for Garland at Bedford

After several weeks off through injury Brighton & Hove’s Katie Garland made a fine debut to her competitive season by finishing fourth in the National U20 Heptathlon at the National Combined events championships at Bedford.

Despite her problems strung together a fine series of performances including a windy hurdles in 14.61s a high jump of 1.63m and long jump of 5.46m to total 4664 points to Michelle Hughes’ winning score of 4926.

Fellow Brighton & Hove members Matt Smith finished ninth in the U20 men’s senior event with 5486 points and senior Becky Owen matched this position with 4655 points.

The Weekend.

This weekend the accent will be on the second round of the Lower Age Group matches of the Youth Development League at Various venues across the South East.

Back in April in the first round Sussex teams made a great start with Crawley, Brighton & Hove and Horsham Blue Star all winning their matches and they will be hoping to repeat the medicine again on Saturday.

Crawley will travel to Guildford, Brighton & Hove to Chelmsford and Horsham to Bournemouth where Chichester will also be in action.

In East Division two Lewes will also be hoping to notch up a victory as the have a home match where East Grinstead, Hastings and Worthing will also be in action.

On Sunday several Sussex athletes will in action of the Loughborough International match where Brighton Phoenix athletes Archie Davis (1500m) and Spencer Thomas (800m) will be competing for the England U20 squad while club mates Finley Bigg and Daniel Eeles will be running in the Guest events..

Sebastian Rodger will race in the International 400m hurdles while a trio of Brighton & Hove hurdlers will also be in action with Matthew Hewitt and Cameron Fillery competing in the senior and U20110m hurdles and Gwilym Cooper in the 400 metre hurdles..

The Southern Athletics League also hold their second matches of the season with all of the Sussex matches held on Sunday.

In Division one Crawley are off to Chelmsford while in Division two West Brighton & Hove are off to Bracknell. In 3SW Horsham have a home match where Chichester are amongst the visitors and Worthing compete at Reading.

East Grinstead have a home match at Crawley in 3SE while in the same division Eastbourne will be in action at Wimbledon and Hastings have a home match with the Lewes/Haywards Heath team amongst the visitors.
