Four Golds for Sussex at the Southern Champs

3 June, 2019 By Melanie Anning

There were four gold medals and another for a Sussex based athlete, five silvers, two bronzes and plenty of top eight placings for the few Sussex athletes who trekked up to Bedford, for the South of England Championships.

All the wins were on the field and all bar one were by under 20 athletes. Worthing's Ben Hawkes swung the hammer out to 66.95m to take the u20 men's title. His club mate Sam Ilsley took bronze with 51.84m.

Eastbourne's DJ Thomas put the shot to 17.65m and Crawley's Natasha Purchas cleared 3.40m for victory in the pole vault. Tonbridge's Nicole Taylor won the senior 3000m in 9:20.3s.

Italian junior international, Mame Diarra Sow, who is studying in Sussex, and will soon have been here for the required nine months, which prevented her from keeping the  gold medal at the recent county championships, triple jumped a championship and personal best of 12.92m.

There was a 2-3 for Crawley 400m hurdlers Jessica Lambert and Grace Vans Agnew. USA college bound Lambert ran a PB of 61.23s and Vans Agnew finished in 62.45s.

Meanwhile Brighton u20 Tom Eames won silver in a slow 1500m, with 3:55.08, six seconds off his best. Tonbridge's Joe Fuggle followed suit in the senior 400m hurdles in his second fastest time of 52.55s. Crawley's George Turner was second in the senior men's pole vault competition with a clearance of 4.70m and his u20 club mates Jamie Lambert and Hugo Hewitt were silver medallists in the 400mH and 3000m S/C in 54.29s and 11:07.84 respectively.

Eastbourne had a good showing in the sprints with Bailey Wright making the final of the 100m (seventh in 11.11s) after a 10.87s semi, in which Bryn Smith also ran 10.99. Smith was fifth in the 200m final in 21.78s. Their club mate Moyo Sargent made the final of the 400m where he ran 49.47s for seventh.

Crawley's Lillie Franks, who like Lambert is USA bound to college, was fourth in the senior women's high jump with 1.65m, as was her club mate Marcin Balun in the Senior men's javelin with 57.79m. Lewes' Jack Harris was also just out of the medals with his 4.40m pole vault.

Crawley's Cara Anderson ran 2:12.12 for fifth in the senior women's 800m and Matthew Overall was sixth in the 400n in 48.45s. Horsham's Molly Adams ran a 25.67s heat before a 25.87s final for sixth place in the senior 200m.

Three Brighton discus throwers all came 7th,  Leo Walker U20 threw 37.99m, Paddy Vermes and Sarah Hewitt - seniors 37.73m and 33.64m respectively.

In a rare outing and in his first race over 200m this season, Brighton Phoenix's reigning European junior champion Toby Harries ran a nippy 20.92s heat, but may have picked up an injury as he was DNS for the semi final.
