Despite the strength of opposition, Surrey, Kent and Hampshire, there were several impressive performances from the Sussex youngsters in the Inter-County Schools match at Erith on Saturday.
There was a particularly impressive sprint double from Alyssa White in the junior age group with winning performances of 12.41 and 25.78s while in the same age group Natasha Purchas was again over 3.05m to win the pole vault.

In the intermediate age group Orla Brothers again swept to an impressive victory over the 300m in 40.7s, Neil Calum launched himself over 4.40m to win the pole vault and Scott Staples repeated his fine recent form in the javelin throw winning with 56.60m.

These and many other fine performances including Amber Pennington’s Schools standard in the J.G javelin throw with a PB of 33.06m, Hugo Hawes JB high jump clearance of 1.72m and a fine PB of 5.15m in the JG long jump by Lauren Lethbridge could not prevent Sussex holding up the surround trio of counties in the team event.

Southern Athletics League.

Scoring 212 points Crawley managed to keep clear of Chelmsford’s 196.5 points with T.V.H on 181.5 and Stevenage on 141 in their Division One match of the Southern Athletics League at K2..
The Crawley success was highlighted by a scintillating sprint double from Jason Hussain who clocked a nippy 100m in 10.8s and 200m in 21.8s.

Amy Barclay doubled in the women’s events winning the 100m in 12.7s and then adding the 100m hurdles in 14.8s while Beth Crocker leapt 5.39m for victory in the long jump and Laura Duke, who competed in several events came good in the hammer throw with 43.55m.

After a couple of wooden spoons in their first two matches in Division One this season the Brighton & Hove team, who were reigning champions, fought back at Withdean to take second team spot behind Nene Valley who scored 210 points to the home club’s193, current third placers in the League table, Tonbridge on 154 and Walton on 148.

Peter Moreno took four victories during the afternoon including15.09s for the high hurdles, 49.08s over 400m, 4.10 in the pole vault and 1.70m in the high jump where all he did was to win the event.
Newly crowned South of England long jump champion was again over seven metres winning with 7.04 after striding to victory in the 100m in 11.19s.
