The final races in this season’s Sussex Cross-country League will be breaking new on Saturday and it will be held at the Hickstead Showground and, although Hickstead has been used for the Annual Haywards Heath race in recent years this will be the first time that a County League event has been held there.
Several individual League titles were decided at the Lancing race in December.
Emma Macready (Worthing) senior women, Ben Collins (Chichester) U15 boys and Luke Ellard (Worthing) U13 boys cannot be beaten in the age groups but in the rest of the age groups much will depend if those athletes, who had only run two races, turn up to race.
There will be the Sussex Primary School Finals before the League races at 11.45 with the League races starting at 12.30.
The senior races are a little later than usual with the Women’s race starting at 2.20 and the Men at 2.50.
England Young Athletes Indoor championships
Commanding the attention of several of the leading Sussex track athletes will be heading to Sheffield for the England Athletics Indoor Age Group championships at Sheffield and there could be some medals coming back to Sussex.
Tony Harries (Brighton Phoenix) will probably start as favourite for the U20 200 metres crown with a possible chance of breaking the European Junior indoor record.
Brighton & Hove’s Amber Anning, who is in her first year in the U17 age group, is also one to watch over 300m. With a 39.57secs indoor run in January she is the fastest on paper and no other U17 woman has yet broken 40 seconds so far this year. Anning is also entered for the Triple Jump but a timetable clash with the 300m may rule this out.
Under 15 Southern Champion, Maia Hardman (Phoenix) may make her mark nationally this weekend over 800m. With only six entrants the race will be a straight final.
Archie Davis (Phoenix) who would have been one of the favourties over either the U20 800 or 1500m events has chosen to give this event a miss.
Linz
A little further afield Sebastian Rodger from Eastbourne and Robbie Fitzgibbon (Phoenix) will be competing for England in an International Indoor meeting in Linz.
