Brighton & Hove’s Jamie Knapp and Nicholas Hollan-Ellidge (Crawley) confirmed their Sussex League titles at Stanmer Park on Saturday, but neither really needed to run.

Knapp choose to sit it out having won the first three senior races but Hollan-Ellidge lined up with the rest of the U13 runners and duly won his fourth race of the season to score 3 points to Henry Yelling’s (Brighton & Hove) 7 points while Max Dumbrell (Brighton Phoenix) scored 9 points to Knapp’s 3 points.

Also scoring minimum points were Thomas Eames (Brighton & Hove) who won three U17 men’s races with George Pool (Hastings) scoring five points in second place and Adrian Haines (Crawley) in the M50 group.

The closest battle of the season came in the U15 boy’s group that almost saw different top three placings in each of the four races. Here both Atticus Mohapi-Dobouny from Lewes and Ashley Williams (Horsham) both scored eight points, which is the highest winning score this season.

Atticus took the title as he recorded the highest placing during the season.

Eleanor Strevens (Eastbourne) scored 4 points to win the U13 girl’s title and she will be able to compete in the same age group next season while the same applies to Anita Ellis (Hailsham) who took the W35 group and Keren Divall (Lewes) in the W55 group.

Jo Spannagl (Horsham) who made a successful return to competition this season did not need to race to win the senior League title with five points while in her absence newcomer Lizzie Clarke from romped away with the senior race and took the U17 league title. For the first time this century Brighton & Hove did not win the Sussex cross-county senior men’s League team title.

Although well clear as they went into the final match their support collapsed and they struggled to complete a scoring six finishing outside the top three teams that saw Lewes take the League title in a knife edge finish with Haywards Heath scoring 466 points to 467.

Lewes completed a fine double by winning the senior women’s crown with 240 to Arena 80’s 246 points.

More final League results are on the web site.
