In his second International appearance for England, Brighton & Hove’s Stephen Ferroni had an excellent race on Sunday, when he finished third in the Junior cross-country event at Elgoibar in Spain.
Over a fast but hilly course the 18-year old was the second England runner to finish clocking 21: 01 to Southampton’s Mahamed Mahamed who clocked 20: 49 in second place behind the French runner Hugo Hay.
Southern 10km walk championships
Steyning’s Sophie Hales continued her fine return to competitive race walking romping away with the South of England 10km Road Walking Championships title at Sutcliffe Park.
In a race that was held in conjunction with the Men’s championships Hales actually finished fourth overall clocking 50:59, which saw her finish eight minutes clear of her nearest rival.
Hales also led the Steyning Club to the team title with Anne Jones backing up well in fourth place in 65:02.
Steyning 15km Open.
There was further success for Steyning walkers in their Open 15km (nearly 10-miles) race walk on Saturday. Right from the start in Steyning High Street Ian Richards, the World M65 walking champion showed a clear pair of heels to has
rivals and at the half-way mark had opened a lead of well over one minute. Richards stretched this lead on the return journey finishing nearly three minutes clear of Ashford’s Jonathan Hobbs in 76:41 to 79:06 while fellow Steyning walker Jimmy Ball finished fourth in 87:08. Anne Jones was the second woman to complete the course in 100:24.
