Amber Anning ran the fastest ever 400 metres by a Sussex woman when winning her seeded race indoors in Vienna on Saturday.
Her time of 53.35s was well over a second faster than the second girl and was the fastest by any British U20 woman this century. In fact not since Marilyn Neufville clocked 53.01s indoors in 1979 has anyone run faster.
All the races were seeded at this large Viennese meeting and the Sussex runner was actually seeded 14th but in her race she outstripped the opposition from the outside lane and lifted her seeding to sixth.
Next Sunday she will again be racing for England in Iceland.
On Sunday there was another Sussex victory indoors when Brighton Phoenix’ George Mills, the former Harrogate and English Schools U17 800m champion in 2015, won his 800m race in 1:50.06s in Bratislava.
Also in action in Bratislava Cameron Fillery from Saltdean finished third in his 60m hurdles race in 7.96s, only four hundredths of a second outside his best.
