Crawley’s James Westlake and Brighton & Hove’s James Turner led the Sussex challenge at the London Marathon on Sunday with both recording personal bests while Horsham’s Elspeth Turner won the W50 race.
In virtually perfect conditions they both had fine runs to crack the first fifty and better the time that Jon Pepper (Brighton Phoenix) recorded when he took the bronze medal in the Brighton Marathon two weeks back.
Westlake, a talented footballer whose running is normally restricted to Sundays, finished an excellent race to finish 27th in 2:26:33s while Turner finished in 35th place in 2:27:55s both had entered the race with personal bests of last year of 2:29 plus.
Sim Gill (Bognor Triath) finished 152nd in 2:35:34s and Dan Anderson from Hastings finished bang on 200 in 2:37:10s.
Haywards Heath runners Paul Tomlinson and James Skinner placed 216th and 345th respectively in 2:37:36s and 2:41:01s.
In the women’s race Elspeth Turner, who has be running very well lately, was a clear winner of the W50 age group event with a nippy personal best of 2:57:52s to place 51st overall in the women’s race.
There was a good battle for second and third Sussex placings with Arena 80’s Tara Shanahan clocking 3:09:48s in 169th place and Kim Low (Haywards Heath) who placed 171st in 3:09:56s.
