Eight athletes scored the minimum possible points to take individual Sussex Cross-country League titles this season.
Youngsters Eleanor Strevens (Eastbourne) U15 girls and Dulcie Yelling (Brighton and Hove)
were among those who won three of the four matches scoring just 3 points.
William Cork (Brighton and Hove) needed to turn out at Bexhill on Saturday (having previously competed in two out of the three matches). He didn’t disappoint, dominating the senior men’s race to take the title.
Also scoring the impressive 3 points was Julie Briggs (Arena 80) O45,
Stewart Gregory (Portslade Hedgehoppers) O50, Rob Creed (Crawley) O60, Dave Beattie (Crawley) O70 and Jane Harrop (Chichester) O55.
There was just one point in it to decide the Under 13 boys’ overall winner. Joshua Dunne (Chichester) finished on 6 points to Arun Khursheed’s (Haywards Heath Harriers) 7. Both boys ran in all 4 fixtures across the season.
It was close in the senior women’s age category where Megan Taylor (Lewes) notched 11 for gold, Lydia Growns (Brighton and Hove) 13 and Jade Elphick (Brighton and Hove) 14.
Only 2 points also stood between Under 15 boys’ winner, Ben Connolly (Brighton Phoenix) and joint silver medallists
Luc Best and Luke Newton, both from Crawley AC.
Chichester’s Ned Potter placed highest over the season in the U20 men (6 points) while Darja Knotkova-Hanley (Haywards Heath) matched this in the U20 women (4 points).
Harriet Bloor (Hailsham), an athlete who has gone from strength to strength running in all 4 league races, came out on top in the U17 girls with
Jonah Davies (Hastings) winning the Under 17 boys.
In the remaining Vet age categories the individual titles were won by Alissa Ellis (Hailsham), O35, Wendy Whelan (Chichester) O65 and James Baker (Chichester) men’s O40.
In the younger age groups, the team with the best score to win the league was Crawley in the Under 15 boys who totalled a brilliant 37 points, meaning they had 3 top 10 finishers in every race. This was nearly matched by their Under 13 girl team-mates who won with just 41 points.
The Under 17 categories were topped by Lewes (64) in the men’s and Brighton Phoenix (52) in the women’s.
Brighton and Hove AC won
the most team league titles over the season taking the Under 13 boys, Under 15 girls, Vet men, Senior Men’s Division 1 and Senior Women’s Division 1.
Other team winners were Arena 80 Vet women, Eastbourne/Bodyworks Senior Women Division 2, Crawley A Senior Men Division 2 and Worthing Senior Men Division 3.
It has been a highly successful 2019/20 Cross-country season with so many highlights. A huge thank you to all our officials, volunteers, athletes and supporters who have contributed to this. Special mentions for Phil Baker (Chair of the Sussex cross-country panel) and Keith May, who have both worked tirelessly to make everything happen and produce all the results.
