Three Sussex teams, Crawley, Eastbourne and Worthing turned in winning performances in their final Southern Athletics League matches last weekend but only the Eastbourne team topped their league, Three South West, and will be considered for promotion. On the other hand none of the nine competing Sussex team are in danger of relegation.
In Division One the Crawley club won a hard fought match at Southampton with 196 points to Dartford’s 187 and Nene Valley’s 183 and finished fourth in the final League table.
In Division two at Kingston Brighton & Hove, who have not had a good season in this league were also involved in a close match but finished up in fourth place though they managed to finish ninth in the League.
It was in Division Three South East that Eastbourne travelled a few miles east to compete at Hastings, the home club were the hosts and it was these two who battled out the match though in the end Eastbourne had a comfortable victory with 323 points to the home club’s 288.
In the League Eastbourne scored 23 points along with Medway and Eastbourne took the title as they had scored 1396 match points to Medway’s 1339.
There are three Division threes and the top four in each league go into another match to decide which eight clubs are promoted to Division Twos East and West so their fate may not been known for a few weeks.
Also in Division Three South both the Lewes/Haywards Heath and East Grinstead finished fourth in their matches at Gillingham and Tooting respectively and finish tenth and 14th in the League.
In Division Three South West Horsham finished third at Reading and finished the season in seventh place in the League while Worthing, who won their home match placed eighth and Chichester, who were second at Worthing placed twelfth in the League.
National Young Athletes Championships
The accent is very much on the youngsters for the next two weekends with the U15 and U17 championships at Bedford this weekend.
Although many of the leading Sussex youngsters feature on the entry list and we could end the weekend with a handful of medals there are still quite a few away on holiday.
On Monday at the K2 Leisure Centre the annual Tom Lintern Open Medal meeting will be held, the final Open Meeting in Sussex of the season..
A reminder
Team managers are reminded that the final of Sussex Under 15 League next Friday has been transferred from Withdean to K2.
