Eastbourne and Brighton & Hove head for promotion.

21 August, 2018 By Sussex AA

A few results from last Saturday’s Southern Athletics League matches reveal interesting results that may well effect promotion chances but these are not likely to be confirmed until the end of the week.

In Division one at Harrow The Crawley club were convincing winners of their match with 224 points to 195 for Norwich, 194 for Belgrave and 165 for the home club but as Crawley were lying down in 11th place they are still likely to finish just above mid-table.

The Crawley success was bolstered by non-Sussex all-rounders Jo Rowlands and Richard Reeks.

Rowlands had an extremely busy afternoon winning no less than six events including a 5.54m long jump and a 40.95 javelin throw while Reeks won four events.

Scott Staples dished up another sixty metre plus javelin victory with 61.12m and Grace Vans Agnew set the afternoon off well with a convincing win in the 400m hurdles in 67.8s while Jade Brewster soared over 3.70m for victory in the pole vault.

In the Division two match at Harrow where Eastbourne Rovers were leading the League table by two points the Sussex team faced their toughest match of the season and were squeezed into third team spot behind the home team who scored 235 points and Ipswich, 233, with 180 points and Orion in fourth place scoring 125.

This probably means that Harrow will overtake them and take the League title but Ipswich will be one League point adrift and Eastbourne will take the second promotion spot.

Emma Noel was the busy athlete here winning the 400m in 63.10s, the 100m hurdles in17.98s and finishing second in the 400m hurdles, the high jump and the triple jump.

Russell Weir took the pole vault clearing 3.50m while Joe Morris took the “B” vault with 3.30m and then won the shot putt with 12.04m and took second place in the discus throw with 38.97m.

The other possible promotion match was at Withdean where Brighton & Hove confirmed their promotion winning their match with 249 points to Havant’s 193, Worthing’s 131 and Poole’s 23 points.

As League leaders, City of Salisbury, also one their match they will be champions and Brighton and Hove will go up in second spot.

There were several doubles at this match with Jimmy Seacombe from Worthing recording a good sprint double in 11.00 and 22.1s and club mate Leah Harris doing a middle distance double clocking 2:18.5s for the 800m and 4:51.8sec for the 1500m.

It was in fact the Worthing Club’s home match as the refurbishment of their home track had not been completed.

Brighton & Hove’s Harry Reinecker-Found cleared 1.95m for an impressive high jump victory while another Brighton athlete Louis Goffin won both the long jump with 5.80m and the Triple jump with 12.73m.

Club mates Kevin Rojas and Howard Bristow dominated the 5,000m winning the “A” and “B” races comfortably in 15:10.5s and 15:18.6s respectively.

There was also a double for Elise Lovell, the County long jump record holder, who now competes for Havant, with a leap of 5.50m in the long jump and a clocking of 14.9s for the 100m hurdles.

In Division 4 SE at Eltham Hastings finished in third place while in the same League at Tooting East Grinstead finished in fourth team spot.

There are still some more Sussex club’s whose results have not been published yet.
