Sussex runners were first across the line in both the men’s and women’s races at the 35th annual Brighton & Hove City 10km road race in fairly good conditions on Sunday morning.

Adam Clarke from Hastings, who was running for Aldershot in the Open race had a good battle with another Hastings runner, Ross Skelton, who runs for Brighton Phoenix and Southampton’s Jonny Roberts.

Clarke was able to open a handsome lead, into a chilly NE breeze, over the second half of the race, to clock 30:24 ahead of Skelton’s who managed to hold off Roberts in the final one hundred metres clocking 30:44 to 30:47.

A great battle to the line saw Aldershot’s Phillip Sewell and Phoenix’s Ian Leitch both clock 30:51 but Sewell was placed fourth to Leitch’s fifth place though Leitch was the first M40 to complete the course.

Fellow Phoenix runners Archie Davis and Max Dumbrell placed 6th and 8th respectively in 30:54 and 31:30 and Davis was the first U20 finisher while Brighton & Hove Kevin Rojas, 31:35, Tom Niner 31:53, and Tom Eames 32:00 finished 9th, 11th and 14th .

In the women’s race Beth Kidger was first woman across the line finishing in 57th place overall in 34:35 ahead of Lisa Davis (Springfield) in 35:19 who was first W35 and Victoria Pritchard (Shaftesbury) 35:44.

Arena 80’s Caroline Hoyte was the second Sussex runner home (8th woman) and first W45 placing 107th in 36:51 and club mates Emily Proto was 10th in 37:00, Tara Shanahan clocked 37:36 and Julie Briggs 37:55.
