Double Gold for Baptiste at Manchester

30 July, 2018 By Sussex AA

Crawley’s Kim Baptiste achieved a double gold medal in the English Championships, which incorporated the Inter-county Championships, at a wet and windy Manchester over the weekend.

The Crawley sprinter is certainly enjoying a purple patch at the moment and were it not for excessive winds she would have again improved the Sussex 100m record.

Baptiste eased through her 100 and 200 metres heats before cruising to impressive wins clocking a windy 11.35s for the 100 metres title and 23.40s for the 200 metre crown.

Fellow Crawley athletes, the Turner siblings, achieved their best results since becoming seniors when they both achieved silver medals.

On Saturday George, the younger of the two, coped well with the difficult conditions to soar over 4.65m for his silver medal while sister Holly eased into the final of the 400m clocking 54.75s.

In even worse conditions on Sunday Holly ran a splendid race to collect her silver medal in 54.65s.

Although not getting amongst the medals a fourth Crawley athlete, Jade Brewster, cleared 3.60m in, to say the least unhelpful conditions for pole vaulting, to take sixth place.

Ollie Smith from Chichester, the reigning Couunty 400m champion, made a National final for the first time when he clocked 48.23s for fourth place in his heat of the 400m and finished eighth in the final in 48.74s.

Jade Lally who lives at Broadbridge Heath was one a very few top English athletes who actually made the journey to Manchester duly won the discus throw with a good effort, in the conditions, of 57.25m to win the title.
