A record number of teams lined up for the Sussex Cross-country relay championships on the Downs at Goodwood and they produced a fine afternoon’s racing on Saturday.
Drizzly rain for the first couple of races and intermittent showers during the afternoon failed to put a damper on the racing.
Individual results will not be available until Monday but most of the team results are known.
First blood of the afternoon went to the Hastings U13 boys’ team who stormed to victory on the third and final leg with Brighton & Hove coming through to take second place ahead of Crawley.
In the girl’s U13 event, which was run in conjunction, Chichester were clear winners from Brighton & Hove with Lewes taking third place.
The U15 races were also held together with Worthing establishing a good lead on the opening leg and romping home well clear of Crawley and Lewes to take the boys title while Brighton & Hove came through on the third leg to win the girl’s race ahead of Hastings and Bodyworks.
The senior, Veterans and U17 races were held together and the senior women’s race saw a convincing victory for the Arena 80 team who led from start to finish with Haywards Heath in second place and Crawley third.
Chichester won the U17 title from Crawley and Brighton & Hove while Arena 80 also won the W35 event.
After Chichester had led on the first leg of the senior men’s race Brighton & Hove took up the running in the and never look like being headed. They finished comfortably clear of Lewes with Chichester holding on to take the bronze medals.
Brighton & Hove also won the U17 title from Chichester and Crawley.
An individual report will follow on Monday/Tuesday when the individual results are made available.
