Crawley AC were celebrating after a battling afternoon of athletics at the Under 13 Sussex League Final on Sunday.
With strong performances across the board, they took the title from Brighton and Hove AC, who have won for the past few years.
In the end it came down to a 44.5 point difference with Crawley on 392.5 and Brighton 348. Chichester were third with 272 points.
Elliot Hanslow (Crawley AC) won both the 75m, equalling his PB of 10.1s, and the 75mH. Team-mate Will Thurston took the top spot in the boys’ shot put with a throw of 11.31. Will is currently ranked 4th in the UK with his PB of 11.65.
Also ranked high and in strong form on Sunday was Brighton and Hove’s Dulcie Yelling. Number 1 in the country for javelin, she was a bit off her best but still threw a winning 37.36m. She also managed a well fought win and PB in the girls’ 600m in 1.46.7s. Rosie Kornevall (Lewes AC) had to settle for second in this race but she had more success in the 150m winning in 20.52s.
Brighton dominated the whole javelin competitions winning the A and B strings in both the girls and boys. Louis Opoku throwing 38.48 (PB), Theo Lilly 34.74 and Eloise White 27.82.
Chichester did the double in the boys’ high jump with Koby Craig jumping 1.40m in the A string contest and Oliver Horton 1.35m in the B.
Like at the Champs back in July, Joshua Dunne (Chichester) and Arun Khursheed (Haywards Heath Harriers) were both in fine form. Joshua took the boys 600m in a PB of 1.43.6s and Arun was a clear winner in the 1000m (3.12.15).
In the girls’ 1000m Gabrielle Holland (East Grinstead) came in with a comfortable lead in first place clocking 3.13.96.
Crawley’s Carys Leyshon performed strongly on Sunday as she has all season taking top spots in the 70mH (12.31s) and shot put (7.74m).
Kyla Ball (Horsham Blue Star) also finished off a great season winning the high jump (1.43m) and the long jump (4.37m).
All the competing athletes, supporters and volunteers helped create a great atmosphere at the K2, Crawley, throughout the whole event. In the end the home team flourished.
