Crawley third at Lee Valley

21 August, 2017 By Sussex AA

Crawley finished their 2017 British League Season with an excellent third place in their final Division two match at Lee Valley on Sunday.

With a Holiday hit team, and the day after contesting a Southern League match the Crawley squad amassed 284 points behind Kingston, 326, and Bournemouth 308 and ahead of Bristol & West who totalled 271 points.

This gave the Crawley team fourth place in the final League placings behind Kingston, Herne Hill and Bournemouth to assure them another season in Division Two.

It was a good team effort by the Sussex club who manged just one individual victory and a nail-biting win in the 4 x 400m relay at the end of the meeting. The team of Matt Overall, who had finished third in the flat 400m in 48.22s, Sam Shore, Craig Cox and George Turner clocked 3:22.06s just nosing home ahead of the Bristol and West team who recorded 3:22.18s.

Turner had won the pole vault with a splendid personal best of 4.71m which lifts him to sixth place on the Sussex All-time Top Ten list. Turner also recorded a PB when cracking 60 seconds in the 400m hurdles when placing fourth in 59.78s.

In Division four at Portsmouth the Brighton & Hove team, who like Crawley had had to contest a Southern League match on Saturday, struggled finishing in fifth place and they also finished fifth on the final League placings behind Trafford who scored 23 points, Nene Valley 19, Portsmouth 18, and Reading 10 with Brighton & Hove on 9 points and Doncaster trailed away with 4 points.

No individual winners at Portsmouth but an excellent second place for Edan Cole in the javelin throw with 54.31m.
