On a cool Friday evening at Withdean stadium there was another exhilarating clash between the East and West divisions of the Sussex County Under 15 League.
There were many exciting races and four league records before the west division winners Crawley finally triumphed overall, to record their fourth successive win with 406 points.
Chichester were second with 388 points and Brighton & Hove scored 342 for third.
Highlights included Jamie Kealey (Crawley), who stormed the Boy's 100m and 200m with times of 12.0 and 23.8 respectively and Chichester’s Alyssa White who also completed the double, equalling the league 200m record with 26.3s and taking the short sprint in 13.0s.
Likewise her clubmate Ben Collins rose to the occasion, breaking his own 800m-league record with a fine 2.04.4.
There were records too for Brighton & Hove shot putters Nancy Tier with 10.30m and Noah Rees who beat the previous record by 1cm with his putt of 12.83m. Meanwhile Natasha Purchas, who is ranked second in the UK for pole vault this year, achieved an excellent late season personal best of 3.20m, minutes after winning the 75mH A race and later the High Jump with 1.50m.
Her fellow vaulter Bill Saunders (Lewes) successfully competed in two events taking place simultaneously. He cleared 3.40m to win the pole vault and launched the javelin out to 40.21m for another victory. Hannah Brockbank (Brighton & Hove) won the hammer with a 36.82m throw.
Results were close throughout the night with just five points between the leading teams at one point. As the atmosphere became more intense, the boy’s 1500m turned into an extremely dramatic race with Ben Martin (Lewes), running in tandem with Will Broom (Chichester) and just managing to secure victory with 4:33.6.
The relays were dominated by Crawley who won all of them. Their boys 4x300 team consisting of Jamie Kealey, Sam Gadsdon, Jack Woodford and Tom Pitts also broke the league record with a sparkling time of 2.41.8.
It is safe to say that there was a fair share of individual and club successes at the final with athletes continuously raising the bar for future competitions in the years to come.
