Crawley Men third but Women struggle in National Leagues

16 June, 2019 By Reg Hook

Following the cancellation of their first match, the Crawley men made a good start to their British League Division two season at Chelmsford, last weekend, with a fine third team placing.

The match was won by home team Havering with 325 points to Glasgow’s 316 and the Sussex club’s 290 points.

Matt Lasis made an excellent return to competition after being immersed in Rugby all last year, to win the Hammer competition topping the fifty metre mark with a splendid 51.94m. He also won the 'B' discus throw with 40.39m after Justin Tarrant threw 40.86m for third place in the 'A' event.

There was also a fine win for Under 20 athlete Ben Okeiyi in the 400m hurdles in 56.83s, which will probably earn him a place in the Sussex Schools' team for the English Schools' Championships. Also for, Brighton athlete, Tim Niner in the 1500m in 3:53.74s, as well as Fred Afrifa in the 'B' 400 metres in 48.41s after Matt Overall had been squeezed into second place in the 'A' race in 47.99s.

A depleted Crawley women’s team had a much tougher time in the UK Women’s League match at Hendon, in Division one, being squeezed into seventh team place with 116 points.

Club team manager Jo Rowland, who contested several events won the shot putt with 13.48 and cleared 1.65m in the high jump for fifth place, which was matched by Lillie Franks in the 'B' event for second place while 'A' third places were gained by Cara Anderson from Perth in the 800m in 2:11.97s and Luton’s Shanara Hibbert, who leapt 12.14 in the triple jump.
