Crawley just miss Promotion to Division One

The Crawley senior men’s team fought hard at Bournemouth but failed to get that final promotion place in Division two of the British Athletics League on Saturday.

A full strength Kent A.C team stormed to team victory ahead of League leaders and hosts, Bournemouth, scoring 323 points to 319 with Crawley in third tem spot with 292 points.

The final League placing were Bournemouth with 30 League points, Kent second with 23 (1137 match points) and these two gain promotion with Crawley third with 21 (1127) to cap an excellent season for the Sussex Club.

Without any doubt the performance of the day, as far as Crawley were concerned, was the fine pole vaulting of twenty year old George Turner.

Turner again won the event but his clearance of 4.93 was his best ever vault and saw him a full metre ahead of the second placed vaulter. Turner’s vault is the fourth best ever by a Sussex vaulter behind three five metre plus vaults.

This proved the best event of the day for Crawley as William Snashall cleared 3.23m for second place in the “B” event.

Turner was one of just three Crawley winners with Scot Staples and Paul Navesey both repeating earlier victories.

Staples has proved unbeatable in the javelin event in these League matches this season and on Saturday he notched up another impressive victory throwing 63.37m.

Navesey has also proved invincible in the 5,000m event and on Saturday he had a great battle with Kent’s Jordan Weaver before winning by two seconds in 15:00.56s.

There were excellent second placings for sprinter Niclas Baker who clocked 21.45s for second in the 200m after being squeezed into fourth place in the 100 metres in 11.05s, Matt Overall clocked 49.23s for his second place in the 400m and Sam Shore gave the team a good start to the competition finishing second in the 400m hurdles in 54.12s.
