A depleted Crawley Women’s team put up a good fight in the final UKWALg match at Leigh, Manchester on Sunday to finish fourth.

Kim Baptiste and team manager Jo Rowland emerged as the only winners on the day with Baptiste, after being squeezed into third place in the 100m in 12.13s steamed to a fine 200m win in 24.12s.

Rowland, who not only manages the team but also competes in several events at each match finished fourth in the long jump with 5.59m, and third in the high jump clearing 1.60m came out on top in the shot putt with a fine effort of 13.46.

Emily Robinson, the English School’s U19 bronze medallist, took third place against tough competition in the discus throw with 36.35m while after Natasha Purchas withdrew at the last minute when she injured her wrist warming up Jade Brewster stepped up the “A” event and placed fourth by clearing 3.60m.

The team amassed 167.5 points to fill fourth place and after a poor start to the season, where they only just missed the relegation spot, they have done much better and finished fourth on the final League placings.

Hard working team manager Jo Rowlands said “We had a weakened team due to injuries and holidays etc. But we pulled together well as a team filling all gaps”.

“I think 4th place was a respectable position, and 4th place is where we finished in the league. This year we wanted to stay in the division, strengthen our squad and push for promotion next year so overall we were very happy with the team performance”.
