Sussex teams Crawley and Brighton & Hove survive to fight another season in Division Two and Division Four of the British Athletics League respectively following fine team efforts on Saturday.
Although neither team provided any “A” winners there were sufficient top three placings for both teams to make sure they stayed in mid table.
At Nottingham, in Division Two, Crawley finished equal fourth with Bristol and this ensured them fourth place on the final league table behind Cardiff on 28 points, Swansea 25 and Kingston Poly 21 with 18.5 and comfortably clear of Bristol who scored 15 league points.
Highest placed Crawley athletes were George Turner and Leigh Walker who both placed second in the Pole Vault with 4.20m and 4.00m respectively while Matt Lasis made a welcome return to competition after injury.
Lasis took third place in the hammer throw with 55.87s, second place in the “B” shot putt with 13.19m after Bradley Hall had putt 13.81m in the “A” event and Lasis took fourth place in the discus throw with 42.62m.
Rhys Turner, who is still in the U20 age group, smashed his PB in the 200 metres when placing third in 21.69s after earlier been squeezed in sixth in the 100m in 11.37s.
Further north at Doncaster an almost skeleton Brighton & Hove team produced their best team placing by finishing third on the day behind Derby and Rugby who were both promoted and this ensured fourth place on the final League table behind Derby who scored 31 League points to Rugby’s 28, Portsmouth’s 20 and the Sussex club’s 18.5 points.
The Under 20 all-rounder Matt Smith was responsible a 36 of the 188 points scored by his team on Saturday.
Smith won both the “B” high jump with 1.80m matching the height achieved by Jack Milnthorpe who finished second in the “A” event and again in the “B” triple jump with 12.57m after Milnthorpe had taken second place in the “A” jump with 12.59m.
