Although senior entries are sparse for this weekend’s Track and Field championships at the Withdean Stadium, they have held up well for the various age groups with the Under 20 entries well up on recent years.
There was a dearth of senior entries in 2019, the last time the championships were held, and there are, if anything, even less senior entrants this year. Some of their events will be combined with the U20 and maybe even the U17 age group, when practical.
This year the event will be held on just one day, Sunday, instead of the normal Saturday and Sunday competition, so it will be a long hard day for the officials. Competition on the field starts at 10 AM with the hammer throw followed by pole vault at 11 AM, with the track events beginning at 11.30. Athletes are expected to leave for home when their event is completed.
The final event, the boys' long jump is scheduled for 5 PM. Some officials and Championships Secretary, Kate Matthews, will be on-site before 8 AM am and will lucky to be home by seven.
All the officials and helpers are volunteers. We need support to stage all county and club events. Please contact us directly if you are interested in getting involved to ensure competitions can happen in the county.
