Amber Anning improved her Sussex U17 300 metre record when she helped her Brighton & Hove Club to victory in the second of this season’s Youth Development Upper Age Group league matches at Winchester on Sunday.

In the first match, of Division One B, local rivals Portsmouth squeezed the Brighton Club into second place but on Sunday, despite fielding a depleted team the tables were well and truly turned as they romped away to win by more than one hundred points with 513 to Portsmouth’s 408. Southampton scored 381, Winchester 369 and Chichester 352.

Anning’s winning time was a record breaking 38.5s but her athletic weekend was not finished there as Monday saw her travel to Newham where she ran an open 200 metres in 24.13s which is a Commonwealth Youth Games qualifying time and lifts her to fourth place on the Sussex All Time senior list.

Alyssa White (Chichester) clocked 26.0s. to win the U17 200m for a Schools qualifying time while thrower Ben Hawkes (Worthing), but throwing for Brighton, completed a hat trick of wins and standards topping the seventy metres mark again in the hammer throw with 71.39m, throwing 49.95m in the discus and putting the shot  a pb of 15.55m.

There was also an impressive U17 800m win for the improving Niamh Halloren who chalked up a pb of 2:22.5s.

Premier 1 at Bromley.

Crawley again struggled in this Division, like most teams in all Divisions it seems it is impossible to field full teams, and Crawley were down in sixth place with 351 points to the winning Blackheath & Bromley’s 868 points.

Grace Vans Agnew looked in good form when she clocked a Schools' standard in the U17 300m hurdles in 44.92s but this only earnt her a close second. In the same age group Katie Bristowe ran 11.94s to win the 80m hurdles and Natasha Purchas soared over 3.50m for victory in the pole vault, whilst Alice Steer threw 47.91m when placing second in the hammer throw. All of these performances were standards.

Division 1C at Croydon.

At Croydon the home club scored 660 point to Cambridge Harriers 550 with team Sussex (East Grinstead, Haywards Heath, and Lewes) third with 398 points and Horsham Blue Star fifth with 174 points.

Scott Staples (TSx) won the U20 javelin throw with 53.50m while in the U17 age group Alex Wadley notched up a couple of wins taking the 400m in 52.20s and the triple jump with a leap of 12.27m and Jack Harris (Tx) took the pole vault clearing 3.75m.

English Schools' Information

The English Schools' Championships takes place on the 7th-8th July 2017 at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. To be considered for the Sussex team athletes have to achieve a qualifying standard. You can view the 2017 English School standards here: https://www.esaa.net/v2/2017/tf/tf17currentstands.php

If your child is in the top four in the county and has achieved a qualifying standard please ensure he/she is registered on the English Schools' portal under Athlete Registration. https://www.esaa.net/v2/2017/tf/tf17intro.php However, please do not register if they have not achieved the standard required. Please also note that achieving a standard does not guarantee selection for the county team.
