Brighton & Hove win Nail-biter

A neck and neck battle for the Sussex Under 13 League Crown went to the wire on a damp, murky Sunday at Crawley’s K2 stadium before Brighton & Hove got the better of reigning champions, Crawley.

Brighton & Hove, 349.5 points, took an early lead and managed to hold on to a narrow margin and this reversed last year’s result. Crawley scored 345,  Horsham Blue Star finished in third with 284 points, well clear of fourth placed Chichester.

The dank weather conditions did not dampen the enthusiasm shown by the athletes, who provided a fine afternoon of competition, but it did impact on the performances during the afternoon.

It was not a good year for record breaking anyway and just one fell on Sunday, the 1000m, which in turn had been the only record to tumble this season.

East Grinstead’s Ethan Scott, who is actually a Surrey athlete and had dominated the Sussex Cross Country season last winter, was in a class of his own despite being probably the smallest athlete in the field.  This mattered not one iota, he was always in the mix, was leading at the bell, and stormed down the home straight five seconds clear of his nearest rival in 2:56.6s and a second inside the existing record.

Worthing’s Bailey Smith chalked up a fine sprint double clocking 10.1s for the 75m and 19.3s for the 150m while Adam Lawson (Lewes),  proved a convincing winner of the 600m in 1:45.4s after taking second place to Smith in the 150m in 19.5s.

In the girls 75m event Crawley’s Michelle Okorie looked an impressive winner in 10.6s while club mate Katie Bradley did the double in the throwing events - putting the shot 8.52m and throwing the discus 27.16m.

There was another throwing double for a Crawley athlete when James Pratt threw the javelin 35.25m and putt the shot 7.41m.

Rachael Wall (Brighton & Hove) had a good victory in the girls javelin throw reaching 26.89m
